Parliamentary News
Hello Everyone,
As Parliamentarian I thought it would be good to include a brief refresher in our newsletter about Parliamentary procedure. I have listed below some commonly asked questions with answers to them so that we are able to keep our Parley-Pro fresh in our minds and learn new things about Roberts Rules of Order Newly Revised. I also added reference pages if you would like to learn and find out more. Have fun with your Parliamentary Procedure!

How can I get an item on the agenda for a meeting?
For a proposed agenda to become the official agenda for a meeting, it must be adopted by the assembly at the outset of the meeting. At the time that an agenda is presented for adoption, it is in order for any member to move to amend the proposed agenda by adding any item which the member desires to add, or by proposing any other change.
It is wrong to assume, as many do, that the president "sets the agenda." It is common for the president to prepare a proposed agenda, but that becomes binding only if it is adopted by the full assembly, perhaps after amendments as just described.
If you would like more information about this question, RONR (10th ed.), p. 363, l. 8-20; see also p. 16 of RONR In Brief is a great reference.
If minutes of a previous meeting are corrected, are the corrections entered in the minutes of the meeting at which the corrections were made?
If corrections to minutes are made at the time when those minutes are originally submitted for approval, such corrections are made in the text of the minutes being approved. The minutes of the meeting at which the corrections are made should merely indicate that the minutes were approved "as corrected."
If it becomes necessary to correct minutes after they have initially been approved, such correction can be made by means of the motion to Amend Something Previously Adopted. In this event, since the motion to Amend Something Previously Adopted is a main motion, the exact wording of that motion, whether adopted or rejected, should be entered in the minutes of the meeting at which it was considered.
If you would like more information about this question, RONR (10th ed.), p. 452, l. 12-15; p. 458, l. 10-16; see also p.151 of RONR is a great reference.

This beautiful quilted eagle wall hanging designed and made by WCRW member Wilma Reaser, will be the prize in the fundraising project sponsored by Weber County Republican Women to purchase furnishings for the Weber County Veterans Nursing Home.
Tickets will be $5.00 each or 20 for $5.00 and will be available at the April meeting for all members to take and sell. We will keep the fundraiser open through the summer and invite representatives of the nursing home to our September meeting to receive the proceeds of our efforts and to draw the winning ticket.
They plan to open the nursing home on Veterans Day, November 11, 2009.
This is another “Caring for America” project sponsored by Weber County Republican Women.
Thank you in advance for your wonderful support. See you April 6.
Love to you all
Pat
THE LINCOLN LEGACY BELONGS TO THE REUBLICAN PARTY
This year being the 200th anniversary of the birth of Abraham Lincoln is a terrific opportunity to refocus on our Party’s heritage. Republicans should get Back to Basics. We should not let Barack Obama steal from us the legacy of the Great Emancipator.
It’s often said that “the Republican Party is the Party of Lincoln.” That’s true, but what does the phrase “the Party of Lincoln” actually mean? And, more importantly, what should it mean for us Republicans and the country we love?
The mission of the Republican Party has always been, as Lincoln said, “to lift artificial weights from all shoulders.” And that “artificial weight” is the weight of government.
In 1854, Lincoln helped establish the GOP with a speech denouncing the Democrats for passing the law that allowed slavery to expand into the western territories.
”Slavery is founded in the selfishness of man’s nature—opposition to it is in his love of justice.”
Taken from an article written by Michael Zak a popular speaker to Republican organizations around the country. He is the author of “Back to Basics for the Republican Party.” For more information see www.RepublicanBasics.com.
